Map the light before planning a bed

Sketch your outdoor space and mark fixed features such as fences, trees and paths. Visit at several times of day and note where direct sun falls. Repeat on another day rather than relying on one quick look.

Add the date to each observation because shadows change through the year. Mark places that are difficult to reach or where water collects. These notes help you compare possible locations before committing to a layout.

Use the map alongside the requirements of the plants you are considering. Leave room to walk, carry tools and reach the middle of a bed. A clear access route deserves space on the plan just as much as a planting area.
